Perdiswell Leisure Centre, Worcester

The scheme involved the construction of a £10.5 million, eight-lane swimming pool complex as an extension to Perdiswell Leisure Centre in Worcester. The main pool hall also features a new teaching pool with a movable floor as well as a new wet changing village to support the pool area. In addition, a new extension houses a large fitness gym, fully refurbished eight-court sports hall, three separate fitness studios and two teaching rooms.
The project involved part demolition of the existing leisure centre and significant structural refurbishment, including removal of load bearing masonry walls, removal of a lift shaft and the trimming of pre-cast concrete floor planks. To facilitate these works, Rubix Consulting assessed the temporary stability of the retained structure through-out the demolition phases and detailed temporary support as necessary. Designs were also produced for propping and needling schemes for the safe removal of load bearing elements and installation of new structural steelwork. In addition, Rubix Consulting devised a methodology for carrying out strengthening works to existing strip and pad foundations as part of the new works in the changing areas.
The new extensions comprised of multi-storey steel frame structures with pre-cast concrete floor planks founded on CFA piles. To enable the safe operation of the CFA piling rig Rubix Consulting designed a granular piling platform which, later in the project, functioned as a working platform for mobile cranes used for lifting in steelwork and pre-cast concrete floor units.
