Walton-on-Thames Station AFA Footbridge, Surrey

Client: FF&P Consulting | Location: Walton-on-Thames, Surrey | Value: £6 million

Rubix were delighted to work alongside FF&P Consulting and their client, Octavius Infrastructure to deliver this interesting scheme, which was vital for improving accessibility and safety at the station. The project, which was funded by the Department for Transport’s (DfT) ‘Access for All’ scheme, has made it easier for customers with impaired mobility or those travelling with luggage, children or bicycles to navigate their way around the station by providing step-free access to all of the station’s platforms.

A highlight of the accessibility strategy was the installation of a new steel footbridge, which was fabricated off-site and lifted into position using a Liebherr LTM1500-8.1 mobile crane. The crane, capable of lifting 500 tonnes, exerted forces of 148 tonnes per outrigger onto the station carpark. Rubix assessed the geotechnical competency of the ground and designed the temporary foundations for the crane.

Other temporary works included the design of the piling platform to allow the installation of steel mini-piles for the new bridge foundations and ground support for the construction of the new lift pit foundations.

Testimonial

“In the realm of railway construction projects, where precision and efficiency are paramount, success hinges on the expertise and dedication of the professionals we partner with. We are delighted to take a moment to express our heartfelt gratitude to Rubix Engineering, whose exceptional work has been instrumental in our recent triumph in the completion of the Walton on Thames Access for All project.

At the heart of our project lay the critical elements of Temporary Works Designs for various Crane Outriggers, Excavation Supports, and Construction Sequence Planning. These aspects, while often behind the scenes, are the foundations upon which the entire project stands, and their success was pivotal to the safe and efficient execution of Walton on Thames.

Rubix Engineering came into the picture as our guiding light, and their performance exceeded our highest expectations in every regard. What sets them apart is their unwavering commitment to excellence and their remarkable ability to integrate temporary and permanent works designs seamlessly. This integration was key to ensuring not only the safety and reliability of our project but also its timely completion.

Perhaps one of the most remarkable aspects of our collaboration with Rubix Engineering was their ability to deliver high-quality submissions within incredibly tight timescales. The railway industry is notorious for its demanding schedules, and the Rubix team not only met but exceeded our expectations in this regard. Their efficiency allowed us to maintain project timelines without compromising on safety or quality.

One of the crowning achievements of our partnership was the fact that Rubix Engineering achieved design approvals on the first submission with zero comments. In an industry where revisions and feedback loops are often the norm, this is nothing short of remarkable. It's a testament to their attention to detail, their deep knowledge of engineering principles, and their commitment to getting things right the first time.

In addition to their technical prowess, we would be remiss not to mention the exceptional communication and collaboration skills demonstrated by all members of the Rubix Engineering team, with a special shout out to Adil and Edgaras. They worked seamlessly with our team, fostering an environment of trust and cooperation that contributed significantly to the project's overall success.

As we reflect on the completion of the Walton on Thames project, it's clear that Rubix Engineering played an indispensable role in bringing the project to life. Their dedication to excellence, their ability to deliver under pressure, and their commitment to getting it right from the outset have made them not just partners but true allies in our journey.

On behalf of our entire team, we extend our deepest thanks to Rubix Engineering for their outstanding contributions. We look forward to the possibility of future collaborations, knowing that with them by our side, any project is destined for success.”
